Please excuse the poor quality photograph.

I have been impressed with the Hidden Horsham site. It makes you realise how much you take for granted around you.

Here is something I spotted in a very familiar place the other day.

My questions are:

What is it?

What is its purpose?

Where is it?

and how old is it?

I think I know the answer to the first 2 and I obviously know the answer to the 3rd one but its the last one I have no idea of.

Hello, it looks like a firemark (?) to me - the precursor to fire insurance. Properties would have these on the outside of the building to show that they had paid towards the fire service.

As to where and how old I don't know. Mid 18th C I would have thought.

I can't recognise the building from the yellow background.

Nice one, can you tell me if I am right - and where it is because I don't recognise it!

Thanks

M

Thanks. You are correct.

Since I posted this I have found this website:

http://www.firemarks.co.uk/Pages/page02.htm

That would date it anywhere between 1707 and 1959 !!!

I might email the site owner to see if he can help.

As to its location, having done a bit of research It might be quite valuable and it is in a vunerable position so I would rather not say in an open forum.

I will send you an email

You will see from my site that I have a few pages devoted to features like this. I think that there are about 40 such photos now so if you want to see how well you know Horsham then visit Hidden Horsham thumbnail galleries

In the meantime can you spot this one:

OOPS

Embarrassingly this has turned out to be a lead fake.

Thanks to Roy of firemarks.co.uk for putting me straight.

I think I will stick to computer programming and leave antique spotting to those that know better!
